Japan is a recurring theme that has been used as starting point for research by many designers worldwide. Research and the analysis of trends is the first job for any fashion designer. Themed research is a major step in the conception of a collection and as a consumer you may notice that colour is the first thing that attracts you to a dress, a sweater or a pair of shoes and is the principal reason to buy.
Begin the day with a talk about research methods with Fashion Author and Lecturer Ezinma Mbonu, who studied Fashion Womenswear at Central St. Martins followed by a Masters at the Royal College of Art. Ezinma produced her own label and then went on to complete a Masters in Social Anthropology at Goldsmiths. You will have the chance to ask questions about her design theories, her own design methods and her published books. After a Q&A with Ezinma you will be shown how to analyse colour from objects using vintage Japanese textiles as your starting point. You will mix colour to produce an industry-style colour palette.

The afternoon session will involve a clothed model wearing vintage Japanese clothing to allow you to produce full colour fashion illustrations. Inspiration will be taken from modern and contemporary artists, designers and illustrators. By the end of the workshop you will have a range of vibrant colourful fashion illustrations suitable for addition to a portfolio or to take home and frame.
